The Life Journey of Zhang Ruoxu, Master of a Single Masterpiece
Zhang Ruoxu (c. 660-720), a native of Yangzhou, was an early Tang poet celebrated as one of the 'Four Scholars of Wuzhong' alongside He Zhizhang, Zhang Xu and Bao Rong; he served as a military aide in Yanzhou. Only two of his poems survive, yet 'A Moonlit Night on the Spring River' (Chun Jiang Hua Yue Ye) distills the spring river, the moon, parting sorrow and cosmic contemplation into one luminous arc — hailed by Wen Yiduo as 'the poem of poems, the peak upon peaks.' Thus the saying: 'One masterpiece alone, and he stands among the masters.'
Timeline of the Journey

Passed his youth in Yangzhou, its temples, bookrooms and song towers giving him a singular lens on the human world.
Traveled to Suzhou, exchanging poetry and wine with Zhang Xu and other Jiangnan talents amid water lanes and Tiger Hill.

Reached Runzhou (Zhenjiang) where river meets canal, as the fame of the 'Four Scholars of Wuzhong' spread through the south.
Traveled north to the eastern capital Luoyang, carrying his reputation into the literary circles of the heartland.
Took office as a military aide in Yanzhou, the home region of Confucius, close to the sagely air of Qufu.
Returned home to Yangzhou after years of service; the familiar river moon stirred his final meditation on life and the cosmos.
Died in his hometown at about sixty — obscure in his lifetime, immortal through one poem that flows on like the spring tide.
Zhang Ruoxu proves that a single poem can outweigh a thousand: 'A Moonlit Night on the Spring River' turns a moonlit waterway into a mirror of existence, asking 'Who by the riverbank first saw the moon? When did the moon first shine on man?' — questions that still ripple outward today.
