世人皆知白居易是写下 “野火烧不尽,春风吹又生” 的大诗人,却少有人知晓,这位乐天先生,还是一位实打实的 “千古花痴”。他一生爱花、惜花、咏花,将满腔温柔与闲情,尽数托付于草木繁花,在一瓣一花之间,藏尽半生烟火与诗意。
白居易的一生,辗转仕途,起落浮沉,可无论身处庙堂还是归隐闲居,鲜花始终是他最忠实的知己。春日牡丹盛放,他写下 “花开花落二十日,一城之人皆若狂”,描摹出全城人共赏牡丹的盛景,也藏着自己对繁花的痴恋;夏夜荷风拂面,他沉醉于 “菱叶萦波荷飐风,荷花深处小船通”,泛舟花间,不问俗事,只享清欢;秋日桂花飘香,他偏爱 “人闲桂花落,夜静春山空” 般的清幽,在细碎花香里安放心绪;冬日梅花傲雪,他于寒枝间寻得暖意,以花慰心,淡然自守。
他爱花,爱得坦荡直白,从不会刻意掩饰。晚年退居洛阳,他在宅中广植花木,修池筑园,自称 “花翁”。花开时欣然赏玩,花落时黯然感伤。他写惜花,“惜花春起早,爱月夜眠迟”,为了看花清晨早起,为了惜月深夜不眠,这份热忱,全然是孩童般纯粹的欢喜。他不似文人故作清高,将爱花之心直白袒露,花开便赏,花谢便叹,热烈又真诚。

Poems and Flowers — Bai Juyi, the Flower Lover
Everyone knows Bai Juyi as the great poet who wrote the famous line “Wildfires burn not the grass; spring breeze revives it again.” Yet few know that Mr. Letian, as he called himself, was a genuine lifelong lover of flowers. Throughout his life, he cherished, admired and wrote about flowers. He poured all his tenderness and leisure into blossoms and plants, hiding his worldly life and poetic soul among every petal and bloom.
Bai Juyi experienced ups and downs in his official career. Whether serving in the imperial court or living in seclusion, flowers were always his most loyal companions. When peonies bloomed in spring, he wrote, “Peonies bloom and fade for twenty days; all people in the city go mad for them.” He depicted the grand scene of citizens enjoying peonies together, as well as his own deep love for flowers. When lotus winds brushed his face in summer nights, he indulged in the beauty of water plants and lotus flowers, boating among blooms, free from worldly worries. When sweet osmanthus bloomed in autumn, he loved its quiet fragrance to calm his mind. When plum blossoms braved the snow in winter, he found warmth in cold branches, comforting his heart with flowers.
His love for flowers was open and sincere. In his later years, he retired to Luoyang, planting flowers and building gardens in his house, calling himself “the old man of flowers”. He enjoyed blooms joyfully and grieved when they faded. He wrote, “I rise early to cherish flowers in spring; I sleep late to admire the moon.” He got up at dawn for flowers and stayed up late for moonlight, with pure and childlike passion. Unlike other scholars pretending to be aloof, he showed his love for flowers frankly—celebrating blooms and mourning their fall, warm and genuine.
For Bai Juyi, flowers were not cold and proud symbols, but gentle marks of ordinary life. He used flowers to express joy, leisure, open‑mindedness and melancholy. When frustrated in politics, flowers comforted his loneliness. When living peacefully, flowers brightened his daily life. He poured his love for life into his fondness for plants. He ignored the noise of fame and fortune, only loving the beauty of every leaf and flower. This wisdom made flowers in his poems lively and vivid, allowing us thousands of years later to feel the softness hidden in his love for blossoms.
To be a flower lover is not to indulge in superficial beauty, but to keep romance in heart and find beauty in ordinary plants. With poems as his pen and flowers as his friends, Bai Juyi devoted his lifelong affection to blooms, letting flowers forever bloom in time along with his verses.
